With the Nintendo Switch, you have to take into account the portability and the ease of use. Whether you’re in handheld or docked mode, we feel like these games are the top 10 Best Games on the Nintendo Switch Console. Keep in mind that these are in no particular order, but we feel pretty strongly about each and every one of them. Let’s get into it.
Top 10 Best Games on the Nintendo Switch
Super Mario Odyssey
Without a doubt, a crowning jewel of the Nintendo Switch is Super Mario Odyssey. This game is simply fun to pick up and play. It’s been criticized by some for being too easy, but with a large difficulty spike in the end game content. Regardless, we see this as one of the best games on the Nintendo Switch to date. That being said, this has hours upon hours of content. Some of us are still playing this and are well over the 100-hour mark.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
One of the launch titles of the Nintendo Switch, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is by far one of the most amazing games of 2017, if not in this generation of consoles. The sheer freedom in this game takes the series back to its roots. Nothing is stopping you from heading straight to Ganon at the beginning. If you haven’t played this game, then pick it up. Another game that Nintendo got perfectly.
Cave Story +
Cave Story + is a phenomenal hybrid of platforming adventure and 2D shooter. The version on the Switch is an updated rerelease of a 2004 PC game. The deep story and gameplay have aged beautifully. To this day this still remains as one of the best in its class. If you have an itch for a Metroidvania game, then this would be it.
Steamworld Dig 2
Steamworld Dig’s sequel Steamworld Dig 2 is a nice update to the original. The mechanics remain the same and the gameplay feels the same, aside from a few changes and new additional tools. The overall narrative feels better with the inclusion of a sidekick to go along with you to add some banter and humor. This is a perfect “pick up and go with your Switch title”.
Buy it: Nintendo eShop
The highly anticipated sequel to Wii U’s Splatoon brings the series to a whole new audience. The Switch has already surpassed Wii U’s entire generation of sales in less than a year. Splatoon 2 is a great time for fans to jump in as well as newcomers. Its multiplayer competitive nature is a perfect FPS redefined title.
SnipperClips is a cute physics-based puzzler that’s best played with a friend. Couch co-op is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about SnipperClips. Humor and fun are almost always guaranteed to be had with this title. With its recent update, even more, levels are added to the base game as DLC.
Sonic Mania is a game for fans by fans. Sega took a risk and hired a team of developers that were known for porting and keeping alive the 2D Sonic titles on mobile platforms. Sonic Mania is a remix of old titles with a few new ones created by the developer. From the opening scene to final level, this game is perfect for gaming on the go.
Arms is the natural evolution of Wii Boxing. The story in the campaign is a little thin for some, but the gameplay and controls are sharp and tight. Even the motion controls are very responsive, despite the JoyCons having connectivity issues. The meat of the game is in the online Ranking Matches. The intricacy of balanced gloves adds a layer of strategy to the boxing title.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
This port of the Wii U title is superb in ever fashion. Everything has been updated with a fresh coat of paint and polish. All of the same functionality plus a few extra bonuses that were added just to the Switch Version. All of the tracks and characters are available to you from the beginning. You’ll still have to play to unlock different parts for your karts though. You can kill hours upon hours playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Shovel Knight and the DLC: Specter of Torment are both love-letters to the NES-era platformers that many of us grew up on. Tight controls with a bouncy feel combine with an amazing soundtrack that’s full of authenticity. If you’re into platformers from that time, then you have to pick up Shovel Knight. It’s by far one of the best games to have come out on the Nintendo Switch to date.
We’ll continue to update this list of Top 10 Best Games on the Nintendo Switch as more games are released. With Nintendo’s proven track record, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Pokemon game, Metroid 4, or another Zelda game on this list. The beautiful thing is that third-party support is strong with the Nintendo Switch, so I can see a lot of games from Third Party Publishers coming soon onto this list. I’m looking at you Project Octopath Traveler.
