In this entry, we take a look at the track Ekoroshia from Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair for the PlayStation Vita.
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, Ekoroshia
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair and its predecessor are stylized visual novels of murder and mystery. Each game sees a group of high school students with Ultimate abilities (aka “Best in the World at…” talents) trapped within an unconventional prison by a maniacal bear named Monokuma. With no way out except the price of escape – getting away with murder – it isn’t long before the bodies start to hit the floor.
After a murder occurs and a body has been found, the students must attend a class trial to determine the guilty party. If they select the wrong person, the murderer is freed and everyone else is executed (and the Game Over screen appears). If the guilty party is selected, they alone are put to death. Before a class trial can begin, however, Monokuma allows the students to investigate the crime scene.
Ekoroshia is the epic theme that plays during Danganronpa 2’s penultimate murder investigation. I won’t spoil any plot details, but suffice it to say this is arguably the most memorable class trial of the game. It is also one of the more complex and high stakes murders, and Ekoroshia mimics the circumstances surrounding the murder perfectly.
As the shock of the murder sets in, the investigation period begins and Ekoroshia builds up with layered guitars, synth, and a rocking drum beat. The track borrows from previous investigation themes, but ups the ante by adding more instrumentation and mini guitar solos. This symbolizes the wild roller coaster ride players experience navigating through this part of the narrative.
Even looking at it on its own, Ekoroshia is an awesome track to rock out to. The Danganronpa series is blessed with fantastic music, and Ekoroshia stands out as one of the best.
