For those of you who are unfamiliar with Minecraft, the above screenshot may not look like much.  But for aficionados of the game, this image may fill you with a sense of dread.

In the procedurally-generated world of Minecraft, occasionally you may encounter some abandoned mine shafts.  These labyrinthine structures can lead deep underground into the eerie darkness where strong enemies and valuable resources lie in wait.  Even if playing on Peaceful mode and removing all enemies from the game, these mine shafts can still increase your heart rate due to their complex maze-like nature.

When everything looks the same, it can be very hard to tell where you’ve been.  Though players may use torches to document their path, these mine shafts contain multiple branching paths.  These paths may lead to massive underground caverns, cramped dead-ends, or they may even loop back to a path you had already explored.  For gamers that suffer from claustrophobia, this can be incredibly taxing as losing your sense of direction could mean you’ll be underground for a very, very long time.

Granted, you can always build blocks under your feet and dig through the ceiling to escape, but you may not always have the tools available to do so.  You never know if you will spend half an hour digging up through the middle of a mountain or, if you’re really unlucky, out into the bottom of the ocean where you will most likely drown.  If fate is feeling particularly sadistic, you may even dig your way into a pool of lava.

Still, the allure of rare materials and enchanted items is hard to resist.
